Chapter 10
Jon had never done a voiceover for a commercial before. He thought it would be easy.
Late on Friday afternoon, standing in a sound booth, headphones on his ears, a microphone in front of him, his script in hand, Jon repeated the lines for the truck company, over and over, as someone from their sales department kept critiquing Jon's inflection and tone.
He had a flight to Miami to catch tonight, and thought he had allowed a lot of time. Now? He was growing anxious.
"Once more, Jon?"
He nodded. What was he to do? He looked at the lines on his paperwork, and waited for the man behind the glass to point to him to begin.
"â¦Our heavy duty, solidly built newest model pickup will not only work like a big rig on your job site, but save you in gas with the highest fuel economy rating in its classâ¦" Jon looked up, the man gestured to read the second paragraph.
"Tough. Dependable. And more power than our competition. This is the Motor-Magazine's truck of the yearâ¦" Jon began to feel slightly hoarse but pushed through it. "â¦Head to your nearest dealership for our great rebates and the best deals on the west coast."
Jon made eye contact with the car manufacturer as he conferred with the producer. The booth was sound proof and he could not read lips.
He was given the sign to read the last line.
"Built tough for the real man's power work-horse. Rugged. Heavy-duty. Everything you want in a truckâ¦and more."
The sound man signaled to cut. Jon waited, hot, thirsty, and wondering what the hell more they wanted. He had done it a dozen times.
The producer signaled him out.
Jon held back profanity 'a thank-fuck!' at being finally done, and removed the headphones, placing them near the microphone.
He stepped out of the booth and wiped the sweat off his lips.
"Good. Thanks."
Jon left the script, shook hands with both the producer and truck manufacturer, and then thanked the sound man.
He left the studio and rubbed his throat, which felt rough. "Jesus. That was worse than the acting roles." He headed home, feeling anxious and rushed. It was nearing the peak of commuting time on a Friday night, and Jon thought though he had a plan, plans never seemed to work.

Trae checked the time. It was nearing nine o'clock and he had a long day at the courthouse, with no word at all on Nadine's arrest, or any change in the divorce proceedings.
He had gone for a run, but the heat was so oppressive he didn't get far before turning back and nearly passing out from the temperatures and heavy humidity. He kept checking his phone and thought Jon had said he would call before he boarded the plane. Trae scanned his emails to find the itinerary since he couldn't locate the actual printout he had done among the mess of paperwork near his computer desk. Jon was supposed to board at six-thirty California time.
To keep occupied, Trae cleaned the house, put fresh sheets on
